This year, Niagara Falls proudly unveils the 42nd Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights—a dazzling celebration featuring 3.5 million lights and over 75 displays that transform Niagara Falls into a winter wonderland. Spanning the Niagara Parkway, Dufferin Islands, and popular tourist areas, the festival invites visitors to explore an expanded winter landscape that highlights Niagara Falls as a premier seasonal destination. The festival runs from November 16, 2024, to January 5, 2025, delivering a mesmerizing experience that promises to leave lasting memories.

Festival Highlights and New Attractions

The Winter Festival of Lights also welcomes several new large-scale art installations by internationally acclaimed artists. These light-based artworks offer interactive, immersive experiences that are sure to delight visitors of all ages:

  • The TUNNEL by BIG ART: A magnificent 100-ft walkthrough installation, The TUNNEL’s polished surface reflects Niagara’s cityscape and illuminates its surroundings with a brilliant beacon of light.

  • Cycle by Serge Maheu: Powered by Creos, Cycle is an interactive installation inspired by the sun and moon, with shifting intensities and colors that respond to movement, creating a vibrant and dynamic light show.

  • Entre les rangs by KANVA Architecture: This urban sensory stroll covers an open space with flexible white stems topped with reflectors, mirroring the rhythm and motion of the city and engaging visitors with an ever-changing landscape.

  • Les Diamants by Perséides studio: Featuring thousands of diamond-like structures, this installation, co-produced by QDS International and various Canadian cultural centers, presents a sparkling, crystalline design that enhances the winter atmosphere.

  • Musical Bikes by Atracktiv: These stationary bikes form a music band of sorts, in which each bike is linked to an instrument’s track. In order to make the song whole, collaboration is essential between the cyclists to ensure all tracks play in harmony.

  • A variety of songs and musical genres: QR codes allow participants to choose their song and to see their cycling distance and speed with data collection.

Opening Event and Niagara Parks Programming

The festival kicks off on November 16, 2024, with an exciting opening event similar to last year’s celebration. Additional entertainment and special programming will take place every weekend through December 1 at Queen Victoria Park, making the start of the season especially vibrant.

Sparkling Winter Lights at Niagara Falls

Experience the pinnacle of the Winter Festival of Lights with the Sparkling Winter Lights Falls Illumination, a mesmerizing, choreographed lighting sequence that transforms the Canadian side of Niagara Falls into an integral feature of this annual celebration. This unique illumination blends vibrant colors and intricate light patterns, creating a breathtaking visual showcase against the iconic falls.

Key Programming Details:

  • Schedule: At the top of every hour, catch these dazzling presentations at 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 8:00 PM
  • Duration: 5-minute specialized illumination sequence

This signature lighting show offers consistent evening entertainment throughout the festival period from November 16, 2024, to January 5, 2025, giving visitors a structured opportunity to enjoy this unforgettable display on multiple nights.

The Sparkling Winter Lights Falls Illumination is a perfect complement to the other Festival of Lights attractions, making Niagara Falls shine as one of the most luminous winter destinations in the world.

Fireworks at the Winter Festival of Lights

Fireworks over Niagara Falls are a highlight of the festival. The dazzling fireworks display starts on November 16 and continues every Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm. For holiday visitors, there will be nightly fireworks shows from December 27, 2024, to January 5, 2025. Don’t miss the special New Year’s Eve fireworks at midnight to ring in 2025!

Fireworks Schedule:

  • November: 16, 22-23, 29-30 at 8:00 pm
  • December: 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 27-31 at 8:00 pm

The Hot Chocolate Trail offers a delectable winter experience with 25 stops and 36 unique flavors of hot chocolate. This self-guided trail supports local businesses and provides visitors with an opportunity to explore the area with each cup. Whether you’re in the mood for a “Naughty” (alcoholic) or “Nice” (non-alcoholic) flavor, this trail offers a delicious way to extend your Winter Festival of Lights adventure.

Clifton Hill: A Festival of Lights Favorite

Clifton Hill is generally lit up year-round, but during the Winter Festival of Lights, the area is further transformed by stunning light displays. Warm white lights drape from trees like Spanish Moss, creating a cozy, enchanting atmosphere. At the bottom of Clifton Hill in Oakes Garden Theatre, visitors will discover beautifully lit spiral trees and bright accent lighting, adding a festive glow to this popular area.

Visitors entering the district from Victoria Ave. and Ferry St. will be greeted by glowing arches marking the entrance to Clifton Hill. The corner of Victoria Ave. and Clifton Hill is a must-see spot, with vibrant displays to light up the night.

About the Festival

In 1982, the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights was established. With over 1 million annual visitors, we are today delighted to be the largest lighting festival in Canada and the most prestigious in all of North America.

Recognition

The Winter Festival of Lights has grown into one of North America’s largest and most recognized holiday light shows, attracting millions of visitors annually and  hundreds of motor coach tours each year.

Numerous honours from the event and tourist industries have been given to the Festival, including the prestigious Events of Distinction Award from Festivals and Events Ontario, Best Volunteer Program, Top Festival/Event in Ontario, and Most Innovative Partnership (FEO). Additionally, the Winter Festival of Lights has long been acknowledged by the American Bus Association (ABA) as one of its Top 100 Internationally Recognized Events.

Each year the festival is committed to keeping the Niagara Winter Festival of Lights: family friendly, free to attend and open to everyone. So bundle up and celebrate the power of light and community!

History

The Niagara Falls Canada Visitor and Convention Bureau, now known as Niagara Falls Tourism, the City of Niagara Falls, the Niagara Parks Commission, and a number of private businesses in the Niagara Falls tourism industry joined forces to create the Winter Festival of Lights in 1982.

The Festival was started as an effort to lengthen Niagara Falls’ summer-only tourist season, which had existed for more than a century. The Festival’s initial season featured a modest assortment of lights displays close to the Falls that attracted a respectable 250,000 visitors. A trip to Niagara Falls became rapidly a yearly winter tradition for family and friends as the Festival displays evolved and audience sizes increased each year.

 1. Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights

The Winter Festival of Lights is Canada’s premiere illumination festival, and has received a number of awards including being named one of the Top 100 Festivals on Ontario, Sponsor of the Year, Best Volunteer Program, Most Innovative Partnership, and the prestigious Events of Distinction Award from Festivals and Events Ontario (FEO). The American Bus Association has long recognized the OPG Winter Festival of Lights as one of its Top 100 internationally Known Events from 2005-2015.

There are many new additions this year, including a 3-D woolly mammoth light display. The mammoth display is part of the Canadian wildlife light displays at Dufferin Islands. This year’s festival will feature 400,000 lights in Dufferin Islands alone (an increase of last year’s 340,000).

Also new this year is the Deck the Falls walking tours along Fallsview Blvd., and other selected venues. One of the much-anticipated additions, Deck the Falls is a self-guided walking tour that allows visitors to admire Niagara’s finest hotel lobbies decorated in their holiday best. Attendees can take in the giant Lite Brite, listen to live musical performances and sample some holiday appetizers along the way.

2. Niagara Falls Santa Claus Parade

The 2016 Niagara Falls Santa Claus Parade is a can’t miss family event that happens this year on Saturday, November 19th.

This year’s Parade will feature 12 marching bands, Superheroes, Stilt Walkers, and so much more!

The Parade Route begins at 11:00 am on Victoria Avenue at Armoury Street, and travels north along Victoria Avenue, turning right onto Valley Way, right onto Queen Street, and then ends just past the Niagara Falls City Hall.

During the Parade:

*The Salvation Army will be giving away free Hot Chocolate at the Roseberg Family Park.

*Free face painting, balloons. and caricatures at City Hall.

*Canada Post will be collecting letter to Santa long the parade route — so have them ready!

*Project SHARE will collect food donations along the route.

Niagara Wine Festival
When: Saturday, September 10th to Sunday, September 25th, 2016 

September’s Niagara Wine Festival features more than 100 events, which include concerts, one of Canada’s largest street parades, and of course our region’s finest winery and tasting tours.
Don’t forget all the exciting festivities that go on at Montebello Park (64 Ontario St.) in Downtown St.Catharines during the second and third weekend of the event. Montebello Park will have a variety of wine tasting and food pairing vendors lined up that are participating in the Niagara Wine Festival.
Wristbands will be in effect for those wishing to drink, however families are welcome as there will be a stroller and wagon entrance through the Lake St. entrance. Apart from the obvious celebration of Niagara’s finest wines, there will be plenty of live entertainment with a list of concerts.
On Saturday, September 24th, enjoy the colours and the pageantry of one of North America’s foremost street parades! Featuring an outstanding procession of marching bands, drum corps, community groups, majorettes, floats and amazing performances. This is one of my absolute favourite aspects of the Niagara Wine Festival.

Coca Cola Concert Series (until September 5th) and Niagara Falls Fireworks

From May 1st until October 30th, 2016, every Wednesday, Friday, Sunday and Holidays at 10 p.m., enjoy a spectacular Niagara Falls fireworks displays in Queen Victoria Park. Come early from September 1st until September 5th, and you will get to enjoy free Coca Cola concerts daily at 8 p.m.

What makes this extra exciting, is that the Onguiaahra: Thunder of Waters will commence during the Coca-Cola concert series (8:00 pm), with the final showing right after the Niagara Falls Fireworks displays (10 pm).

Join Sherman Zavitz, the City’s Official Historian for a FREE walk into the past as he explores parts of Queen Street, Erie Avenue, Park Street, Zimmerman Avenue, Cataract Avenue, and Bridge Street.
This is an interesting and informative tour lasting approximately 90 minutes.

“Culture Days” at the Niagara Falls History Museum

Reasons to Visit Niagara Falls in the Fall

Reading Time:  6 minutes -Without a doubt, the Niagara Region attracts the greatest number of tourists between the months of June to August. These are the months that see the highest temperatures, with average highs between 77 – 81 F, and lows between 56-61 F. Even on the hottest days, you can walk alongside the Horseshoe and American Falls and catch a comfortable breeze and mist to cool you off. Another prime reason to visit in the Summer is the atmosphere of large crowds, and you will get full advantage of all the attractions.

All great reasons to visit Niagara Falls in the Summer, but did you know that visiting Niagara Falls in the Fall has a number of beneficial reasons to plan your trip here as well? Maybe even more of an incentive. Here are some prime reasons to start packing your bags:

Plummeting Hotel Rates 

Fall sees daily highs ranging from the low 40s to the mid 70s. In some cases, it’s not unusual to see snow as early as the end of October. Room rates have dipped since the Summer and will continue to dive as the Fall goes on. Expect to see rates slashed in half. Even on the weekends (when there all still plenty of activities and events to take part in), the rates are generally 50-60% off what they normally are during a weekday in the Summer.

The best way for getting around Niagara Falls is on foot. Most of the attractions and businesses are compacted together in such a way that it makes it easier (and cheaper!) to travel about this way. There are two prime areas that are ‘must-sees’ when visiting the Niagara Falls in the Fall, and anytime for that matter: Clifton Hill and the Niagara Parkway.  Clifton Hill is known as the “Street of Fun by the Falls” for good reason. It’s a street lined with attractions with something for everyone — every ethnicity and every age group to enjoy. Think giant arcades and a “Fun House” for the kids, FIVE Haunted Houses from low on the scare chart to petrifying (hello, Nightmares Fear Factory!) and miniature golf courses for the teenagers, to the Niagara SkyWheel for the Adults, and even a scenic stroll through the historic Oakes Garden Theatre for the Seniors. All these plentiful and varying attractions are steps from one another.

As for getting around the popular Niagara Parks attractions that lie along the Niagara Parkway, the two main draws: Hornblower Niagara Cruises and Journey Behind the Falls, are just minutes from each other and the others are easily accessible by purchasing a WEGO pass for the day for much less than driving and having to pay parking fees (think the Whirlpool Aero Car, Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, Butterfly Conservatory and the White Water Walk).

The Harvest and Festivals 

Niagara is also the home of Ontario’s grape wine harvest celebration. The 64th annual Niagara Wine Festival, based in Niagara on the Lake and historic Montebello Park in Downtown St. Catharines, features more than 100 events between Sept. 12th and 27th, 2015, which includes winery tours, tastings, concerts, Niagara cuisine, wine seminars, live entertainment and one of the largest street parades in the country. The Meridian Grande Parade hosts an outstanding procession of marching bands, drum corps, community groups, majorettes, floats and amazing performances, attracting upwards of 100,000 spectators to the streets of downtown St. Catharines each year. This year’s Grande Parade theme is “Harvest Street Party” and occurs on Saturday, September 26th at 11:00 am.

Another world-known festival that Niagara Falls brings is the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights – November 21, 2015 – January 31, 2016. Since its inception in 1983, it has grown to be Canada’s largest illumination festival and the premiere illumination festival in North America which attracts well over 1.5 million visitors. It was recently included in the Top 10 Canada’s best winter festivals by canoe.ca and recognized as a Festival of Distinction by Festivals & Events Ontario and a Top 100 Internationally Known Event in North America by the American Bus Association.

Let’s also not forget the Niagara Falls International Marathon. This is the only marathon of its kind that starts in the U.S.A. and finalizes in Niagara Falls, Canada. What better scenery than running past one the world’s most amazing sights? I actually did this race before (read: My First Marathon Experience!), and it’s an experience that entrants will never forget, and the beautiful landscape of the Niagara Falls in the Fall is something the spectators will enjoy as they wait for their family and friends to cross the finish line.

Line up? What line up?

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of the Niagara Falls in the Fall is the fact that the majority of attractions remain open, with the others closing late in the season (mid to end of November). 90% of the Clifton Hill attractions stay open year-round, with the only closure being the outdoor play areas (Mystery Maze, Bronto’s Playland) and the outdoor 36-hole miniature golf course, Dinosaur Adventure Golf. Even those attractions can see late closures dependant on the weather. To verify, check their websites, or click here for the opening/closing dates and times of the Clifton Hill attractions on the south side of the street.

Autumn sees little to no wait times at attractions, and if you are visiting scenic rides to capture the beauty of the Niagara Falls in the Fall, you are in for a treat! The changing colours are astonishingly beautiful. Catch a ride on the Niagara SkyWheel to photograph pictures from 175 feet in the sky on top of Canada’s largest observation wheel already being situated on the peak of Clifton Hill.

Get up close and personal on the Hornblower Niagara Cruises. This awesome boat tour unlike any other will get you up close and personal with the Niagara Falls well into November. Voyage to the Falls daytime tours are available as well as the unique Falls Illumination/Fireworks Cruises. Not only is the Hornblower a relatively new attraction (just over a year old), but 2015 now features an extension of the Niagara Falls Fireworks. These displays happen on Friday’s beginning on September 11th, 2015 until October 9th, 2015.

Depending on the hotel that you choose to stay at, driving around is not required. However if you do choose to take your car, you can enjoy many parking fees slashed in half as well. This is the beauty of traveling to the Niagara Falls in the Fall — Inexpensive hotel rates, harvest time in Niagara, many popular festivals and events, little to no line-ups, beautiful changing foliage, and parking fees cut dramatically.

Rumours Night Club in Niagara Falls

Sorry kids this is an adult only attraction! Rumours Night Club is located on Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls and boasts one of Ontario’s hosttest light shows. Luckily they let me in with the camera to see what all the hype was about, and by about 12am I knew exactly why it’s where everyone goes to let loose. The dance floor is huge, and no shortage of bars to grab a drink. After my night in there I would say it’s a great spot to end your night. Friday is ladies night, and Saturday’s DJ rocks the house!

Summer Skywalk 2012 with Jay Cochrane

Reading Time:  2 minutes -It was getting close to 7pm July 6th as crowds gathered at the top of the Skylon Tower and in the streets below wanting to catch a glimps of  “Prince of  the Air” Jay Cochrane who has began his a summer of skywalks!

In 2002, Jay Cochrane became the first skywalker to reappear in the Niagara region since 1897.  He will put his skills to the test walking a 400 m (quarter mile) distance up 50-stories in the sky.   Cochrane says this is Niagara Falls greatest building-to-building skywalk in North American History.  This amazing event will be happening for twelve weeks daily at 7 p.m. (weather permitting), and by the end of summer Cochrane will have performed 81 walks between the Skylon Tower and the Hilton Hotel in the Fallsview district of Niagara Falls.


Talking with Jay he assured me this is just another day for him getting to do something he loves, as well as sharing the proceeds to the Tender Wishes Foundation and the  Boys and Girls Club of Niagara.
Pretty sure I was more nervous then him as I watched the wire blowing with the wind, looking down at tiny model sized looking attractions and thinking wow what if…..BUT before I could think any further Jay stepped out on to the wire crowds gave a quick cheer then everyone went quiet with anticipation.  As he crept further and further to the middles of the wire I was astonished at his bravery for having the guts to do this everyday with NO tether attached,  just him, a wire, wind, and the sky!After being delayed by a week Jay’s first attempt looked like a breeze for him,  crossing end to end in about 35 minutes.

Avec ses caramels mous maison et ses pommes d’amour, vous serez peut-être tentés d’essayer tout dans le magasin. Vous trouverez aussi quelques souvenirs zinzins au Fun Factory pour commémorer votre visite, où vous pouvez faire une main en cire.  C’est un processus vraiment génial où ils immersent vos mains dans la cire colorée qui durcit en n’importe quel forme que vous voulez.

Bien sûr, si vous êtes sur la brèche et vous voulez juste rapidement prendre un un hamburger, vous trouverez à Clifton Hill le restaurant Wendy’s, de bons vendeurs de hot dogs et de bretzels, et d’excellents vendeurs de crème glacée.
